Yes, I am ready for an ambitious, fair and binding agreement in Copenagen, and I am dismayed by the fact that many Arab countries, like Saudi Arabia, are only focusing on protecting the oil trade, instead of insuring the survival of future generations in the Arab region and globally.
Climate is a battle our survival. It threatens our economy and livelihood by increasing poverty, destroying our food security, spreading diseases, dislocating populations, etc.
Whilst rich developed countries are most responsible for climate change, it is poor countries that are paying the price. Arab countries are among those that will be hit hardest by the changing climate. The region has already scarce water and agriculture resources, and climate change will only make the problem worse.
Right now, governments are negotiating a new global agreement that should come out this December, when world leaders come together in Copenhagen in one of the most important summits of this generation.
Yet, the climate change is not a common topic of discussion in the Arab region. On the contrary, Arab oil exporting countries, like Saudi Arabia, are considered obstructionists in the UN climate change negotiation process, because they mainly focus on protecting their oil trade, instead of insuring that developed countries reduce their emissions.
This is weakening the position of developing countries, and threatening the survival of future generations in the Arab region and globally. Unfortunately, other Arab countries are not doing anything about it.
The time is ticking, and we need to come together to build a cleaner and more secure world. Are you ready?
